Getting there
There is no airport on Patmos: you arrive by sea, and that is part of the charm.
By ferry from Athens
Blue Star Ferries sail from Piraeus to Skala, the island's port. Count on seven to nine hours depending on the boat and the stops; night crossings with a cabin are a good option. In July and August, book as early as you can: boats fill up.
Via a nearby island
You can also fly to Kos, Samos or Leros, then take a catamaran or a smaller boat to Patmos. Schedules change a lot with the season: check them shortly before you travel.
Getting around
- Taxis wait at the port in Skala; there are only a few, so book ahead in high season.
- Renting a scooter, a quad or a small car in Skala is the easiest way to reach the beaches.
- A small bus links Skala, Chora, Grikos and Kampos.
- Some coves can only be reached on foot or by boat: that is half the fun.
Good to know
- The season runs roughly from May to October. Orthodox Easter is a very special time on the island.
- At the monasteries, cover your shoulders and knees.
- Skala has a medical centre and a pharmacy. Bring your usual medicines and plenty of sunscreen.
- Cash machines are in Skala; some small places only take cash.
